Newcastle are set to have to pay Jonjo Shelvey £80,000 a week in The Championship next season if the club are relegated, as per The Telegraph, which would make the midfielder the second tier’s highest paid player ever.

The Tyneside outfit face a race against time in their battle to stay in the Premier League, with six games for Rafa Benitez’s men to avoid demotion from English football’s pinnacle.

Newcastle are heavy favourites to go down, with many punters using their voucher code on Betfred on the Toon to go down.

Shelvey moved to St James’ Park from Swansea in a £12 million deal in January, signing a five-and-a-half year deal worth £80,000 per week.

It is believed that the powerhouse midfielder is ready to stay in the North East, even if the club are relegated, which is a plus and a negative.

Although it will give Newcastle a talented player in their potential push for promotion, it will also burden the club financially with a massive weekly outlay in wages.
