Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has praised his team for the fighting spirit they showed in their 1-1 draw with Manchester City and stated that it has given the Magpies a great chance to stay in the Premier League.

The Tyneside club find themselves in a precarious position and need points quickly to avoid a drop to the second tier of English football.

A win over Swansea at the weekend has sparked the St James’ Park faithful’s hopes of a miracle escape act, while a hard-earned draw against City will build momentum further.

Sergio Aguero’s goal was cancelled out by a rare Vurnon Anita strike, with the home side showing much more character against Manuel Pellegrini’s men than in previous games.

Newcastle must now travel to Anfield on Saturday in search of much-needed points, with Bentiez to face his former employers.

The Spanish boss has stated that his team have shown the required character and appetite for the relegation battle and will look to get points on Merseyside.

“We have to win every single game even though my connection with Liverpool is really good,” The Northern Echo quote Benitez as saying.

“We are doing really well. A game always against a good team like Liverpool will be tough but hopefully we will see the same reaction.

“We have to believe we can fight and beat anyone. We have had two games in a row where we have had a great performance of the team and a great connection with the fans. To see the team and fans together again, believing and fighting is the main thing.

“The players are playing with passion and great commitment. Everyone is pleased and hopefully we will continue in the same way in the remaining games.”
