Newcastle United have received a rare piece of good news, with star midfielder Jonjo Shelvey reportedly ready to stay with the club even if they are relegated to The Championship, according to The Sun.

The North East club lost 3-1 at Southampton at the weekend and are now facing a real battle to stay in the Premier League this season.

As such, a host of the club’s better players are expected to seek a move elsewhere, finding a code to leave, with a whole new squad potentially looking to gain promotion from The Championship in 2016-17.

Shelvey moved to St James’ Park for £12 million in the January transfer window and has showcased a solid range of passing and creativity since arriving on Tyneside.

Keeping the playmaker would mean that Newcastle would have one of The Championship’s top players in their ranks should they go down and could well encourage others to forget about an exit and commit to the cause also.
