Steve McClarenWe may only be four games into the start of the Premier League season, but having failed to pick up a win against Southampton, Swansea City, Manchester United or Arsenal to date, Newcastle fans will be starting to worry, but here’s a table that shows why the Magpies along with West Brom and Chelsea supporters should stay calm, for now.

Four games gone, Newcastle have picked up two points, two draws, two losses, two goals and two red cards. Steve McClaren has already said that he doesn’t look at the table until 10 games have gone, but if he did he’d see that Newcastle are second from bottom and only ahead of neighbours and heavily derided Sunderland.

If you were thinking that the Magpies have had a difficult start to the season then you’d be right, as a table that has added the positions of clubs from last season together has Newcastle by the far the toughest start of 2015/16.

Cumulatively the teams they’ve played to date have 22 league positions between them, with West Brom at 31 and Chelsea at 33 also having difficult starts to their campaign, along with the likes of Watford and Everton.

That’s a huge different to Sunderland whose opposition have a cumulative position of 59 and Southampton who are at 65 and theoretically have had the easiest start to the season of any club.

Here’s the table in question…

Maybe that’s why Newcastle fans are still pretty optimistic despite sitting in the relegation zone as we head into September…
