Newcastle United failed to score again in the Premier League this afternoon against Manchester United and with a strike force of Papiss Cisse and Luuk de Jong it’s no surprise that the goals have dried up for the Magpies.
The early 2012 form of Papiss Cisse is now little more than a distant memory, as the Senegal international has been desperately short of confidence for the past 18 months.
Against Crystal Palace a couple of weeks ago, Cisse had chance after chance at St James’ Park before finally sticking one away in stoppage time, which was just his second goal in the Premier League this season (the first from open play) and he had a few good opportunities today.
Early in the second half he brought down a long diagonal ball and looked to curl it past Anders Lindegaard into the top corner, but despite striking it well, the shot wasn’t good enough to get past the Dane.
Then, late in the match, Cisse had the best chance of all, as he controlled the ball on the six-yard box slap bang in front of goal and swung his left foot at it…
It had to be a goal, surely? Was this a fantastic save from Lindegaard or just another poor effort from Cisse…
