It’s official, he’s arrived! Borussia Mönchengladbach striker Luuk de Jong flew into Newcastle airport this afternoon and is set to join Newcastle United on a loan deal until the end of the season.
The 23-year-old has suffered a terrible time in the Bundesliga since joining the German club in 2014 and now has a chance to resurrect his career in the Premier League.
People will question the Dutchman’s goal scoring record, having only netted six times in the Bundesliga for Gladbach, but prior to that he had a scoring rate of better than one in two in the Dutch Eredivisie for FC Twente.
The Swiss-born striker has won seven caps for The Netherlands as well, scoring once against Finland in 2011 in a Euro 2012 Qualifier and Holland don’t just hand out international caps.
He’s also a big unit, standing at 6ft 2in tall, so his aerial prowess should suit the style of English football and give Newcastle a target to aim at and someone to hold up the ball.
It will be interesting to see whether Alan Pardew throws him straight into the starting XI for the Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland on Sunday at St James’ Park, which would be some way for him to make a name for himself.
Here is de Jong arriving at Newcastle airport earlier today…
