As the list of Newcastle United transfer targets over the summer starts to be released, the usual suspects are on there, but according to the Journal there was one name on the list who hadn’t previously been mentioned – Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Etienne Capoue.
It was no secret that Newcastle were after the likes of Darren Bent, Bafetimbi Gomis, Demba Ba and Florian Thauvin, but two names that weren’t widely reported were Norwich City midfielder Anthony Pilkington and Spurs star Capoue.
Joe Kinnear was interested in Capoue before he signed for Tottenham from Ligue 1 side Toulouse for a fee of around £10 million on the 15th of August, which from the early signs looks like a very handy piece of business.
Currently out for a month due to the injury he sustained in the north London derby against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, in the couple of games for Spurs before that the Frenchman looked dominant in the middle of the park.
25 years of age, central midfielder Capoue was supposedly seen as a potential replacement for Yohan Cabaye if he was to leave Newcastle, but of course that didn’t happen so the Magpies weren’t forced to bring in another body in that position.
Knowing that Newcastle were interested in Capoue, I will now be following the Frenchman’s career in the Premier League a little bit more closely to see how he gets on.
Tottenham fans, what have you made of the 6ft 2in defensive midfielder so far?
