stewart-downingNewcastle United are set to offer £5 million for Liverpool flop Stewart Downing according to the Liverpool Echo.

Having completed the signing of Loic Remy on a season-long loan, the Magpies are now turning their attention to the second position they want to strengthen – left wing.

Newcastle have previously been linked with Scott Sinclair and Tom Ince in this position, but Downing looks to be another option that Joe Kinnear is investigating.

The Echo is reporting that Newcastle have contacted the England international’s representatives and that a move back to the north-east is not out of the question for the 29-year-old, who previously plied his trade for Middlesbrough.

Downing, who cost Liverpool £20m from Aston Villa two years ago, has not exactly been a success at Anfield, as shown by his price-tag being one quarter of what it once was.

In those two years Downing has made 65 appearances and infamously went on a baron run without contributing a goal or an assist, although he now has three Premier League goals to his name in a Liverpool shirt.

The question is whether Downing is past his peak, or whether he can recapture some of the form he showed earlier in his career, which has helped him earn 35 caps for England to date.

Also, how would a player who has played for both Middlesbrough and Sunderland go down on Tyneside?

Sorry do we give Newcastle £5M to take him or do they give it to us? Either way they’re getting bumped.

He actually started to turn it around at the end of last season and finished with 3 goals and 5 assists, which isn’t great but it surely isn’t horrible either. He also counts as home grown which is useful. I wouldn’t mind keeping him but Newcastle might be a good move for all parties involved.
