Newcastle have been linked with the Ajax centre-back previously, but this summer has seen rumours really gather pace about the Belgian moving to England.
The 24-year-old has been a commanding presence in the Eredivisie for more than half a decade now, helping Ajax to the league title last season, and continues to impress for his national team, having won 24 caps to date.
The 6ft 1in centre back has been mentioned as part of a double swoop by Spurs along with midfielder Christian Eriksen, and Tottenham are desperately short at the back having sold Steven Caulker to Cardiff.
Liverpool are also looking to add to their defensive options following the retirement of stalwart Jamie Carragher, although the Reds’ interest seems to have cooled.
Despite his £50,000-a-week wage demands, Alderweireld would be a very good signing for the Magpies, although given the other clubs that are interest, re-uniting with former teammate and compatriot Jan Vertonghen at White Hart Lane seems the most likely option.
To throw a further spanner in the works, it is also thought that the Belgian has been offered to Russian club Spartak Moscow, but the Premier League would surely be a bigger draw for the youngster?
It would be some coup if Newcastle could pull it off! Talks with his representatives this week will be very interesting…
