Papiss Cisse Wonga ShirtAs Newcastle United faced St Mirren in a pre-season friendly tonight, the Toon Army were treated to a sight they thought they might never see: Papiss Cisse wearing a Newcastle shirt emblazoned with their sponsor Wonga!

To say it been a difficult summer for Newcastle United and Papiss Cisse would be something of an understatement.

Due to his religious beliefs, Cisse refused to wear a shirt featuring sponsorship from Wonga, the payday loan company, for a time.

As the weeks passed and Cisse’s stance remained the same, it looked as though the Senegal striker’s days on Tyneside might be numbered.

However, Papiss eventually changed his mind after being pictured in a casino (coincidence?) and was back in action for the Magpies tonight.

Before tonight’s match in Scotland Cisse said: “After a huge amount of thought and reflection I have made the decision to follow my teammates and wear the kit. I feel great and ready to go, and cannot wait to be out there against St. Mirren on Tuesday and to play my part for the team.”

Fast forward a few hours and Cisse was back on the scoresheet for Newcastle, slotting home from a Sammy Ameobi assist to net the first for the Magpies in a 2-0 win.

Frenchman Mathieu Debuchy also scored in the first half for Newcastle as Alan Pardew’s men continue their preparations for the 2013/14 Premier League season and a trip to the Etihad Stadium to take on Manchester City on Monday 19th August.
