Newcastle midfielder Cheick TioteCheick Tiote scored his first goal for the Ivory Coast this afternoon, but his goal, which was a header, wasn’t enough to prevent the Elephants from exiting the 2013 African Cup of Nations at the hands of Nigeria.

The match was good news on the whole for Newcastle United, as Tiote found the back of the net and will be on his way back to the north-east, perhaps in time to face Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane in the Premier League next weekend.

Newcastle could do with Tiote against Spurs, seeing as the Magpies were crushed 5-0 at the Lane last season and fell to a defeat in the previous campaign as well.

The return of Tiote would see Newcastle’s strongest midfield three together for the first time, as Cheick would line up alongside Yohan Cabaye and Moussa Sissoko in the middle of the park.

After last year’s disappointment in the African Cup of Nations in which they lost in the final, pre-tournament favourites Ivory Coast were up against Nigeria in the quarter-finals today.

They were 1-0 down before Tiote’s goal levelled matters, but conceded again to lose 2-1.

Amazingly Tiote’s goal was a header and a pretty decent one as you can see below…
