Image for PICTURE: Coloccini welcomes Ba back to Newcastle

Fabricio Coloccini and Demba BaNewcastle United beat Chelsea 3-2 in the Premier League at St James’ Park this afternoon and while the match will be remembered for a brace from Moussa Sissoko, it was also the match that saw Demba Ba return to Newcastle.

Former Newcastle striker Ba didn’t get much of a kick at the start of the match, but was presented with a chance that was saved by Tim Krul, before heading the rebound just wide.

As he headed wide, Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini welcomed Ba back to the north-east in the only way that he knew how – by booting him in the face!

Coloccini clearly didn’t mean to injure Ba, with the Senegal international breaking his nose and forced from the field, but Chelsea manager Rafa Benitez was livid.

The Spaniard said after the match: “I could see a red card that was not shown for Coloccini. So we had a chance, he [Demba Ba] had the ball, he received a kick and got a broken nose, it was bleeding. It was so simple, if it was in the middle of park you would go back and give a free-kick.”

Benitez continued: “It is very simple and very clear – penalty and red card because it was a chance. It’s a strange rule and the penalty could have changed everything.”

A very unbiased view from Benitez there. Here’s a picture of the incident…

coloccini and ba

Not a penalty in my opinion and I was disappointed to see Ba leave the field, but I don’t think he deserved the reception that he got from the Toon Army.

With classy fans like this you have to wonder why Ba wanted to leave, a former player gets kicked in the face on his return to his former stomping ground and you celebrate like you have actually won something other than a standard match. This is just sad, celebrating a player getting a broken nose and two black eyes after he worked so hard and tirelessly for your team, he never bad mouthed your club or its fans but he definitely should have after this classless display.

Also, the picture you have provided was taken milliseconds after Colocini’s foot had hit Ba directly on the nose, no one in history has got a broken nose from being kicked in the chin which is what you are trying to use this picture to elude to, this is honestly a very pathetic article. I hold Toon fans in reasonably high esteem but BS like this just tarnishes the reasonably good reputation that the real fans have.

The fact of the matter if you look at the few seconds before Ba’s injury and during you will see at no time was Coloccini looking at Ba he was fully concentrated on the ball so it wasn’t intentional but maybe slightly dangerous (which could have been a red card and penalty) although 5 minutes earlier you should have seen Ramires dismissed for his 2 footed challenge on Jonás Gutiérrez, as for a Pathetic article no not pathetic maybe slightly biased but then it is a NUFC blog you are commenting on if you want a biased Chelsea view I suggest you frequent one of your own sites

The pathetic element comes from “Coloccini welcomes Ba…” That is pathetic, and yes I agree Ramires should have been sent packing, I do however also notice that you fail to point out Cisse and his red card offence by grabbing/pushing cole around the throat. 10 men chelsea vs 9 men Newcastle. I never said Coloccini intentionally booted him in the face but intent isn’t the issue when you kick someone in the face whilst they are basically at full standing height, “slightly dangerous”? Talk about underplaying the situation! There is no “could have been a red card and penalty” about it, it was a red & penalty every single day off the week, had that kick happened to RVP then every paper in the UK would be covered in it with Fergie spitting fire at everyone. I actually do believe that NUFC deserved the three points, but that doesn’t lessen the absolutely abhorrent refereeing display put on by Howard Webb yesterday.

Did you notice the Ramires assault on Gutierrez before the Collocini incident 2 feet off the ground studs up real leg breaker, was this not a sending off ! Collocini made a last gasp attempt to clear a loose ball at that pace he had no way of knowing that Ba was going to put his head in .if Ba 1 second slower it is a wonder clearance unfortunately BA was very brave and caught one . Absolutely no intent and by the way collocini an BA are good friends.

Dave C, did you even read my last comment? “Ramires should have been sent packing.” As should Coloccini & Cisse. Ba was ahead of him and clearly winning the ball well before Coloccini kicked at it, watch the replays again, as for a wonder clearance, you can not be lifting your feet up to head height, end off. You’re rightly complaining about Ramires being slightly off the ground, never 2 foot off, and yet you feel it’s fine for players to be kicking at head height? Imagine the out cry had JT done that to Sissoko… And again, intent isn’t the issue when you have your foot that high, irrelevant of whether the people involved are friends or not.

    • dave c says:

What height do you suggest a player can raise his foot to make a clearance? Terry has made hundreds of clearances with a his boot high. If collocini had made no attempt to clear the loose ball he would be run out of the club ! Would you expect a Chelsea player to try to clear the loose ball ? Ramires went in with intent and Chelsea should have been down to 10 men after 30 minutes how do you think the game would have played out then?
Collocini Had clearly no intent just 2 committed players coming together unintentionally with Ba unfortunately coming off worst . Send off the sneaky dangerous player every time , but personally I love to watch real men play football be it Ba or Collocini or TERRY

  • SeriouslyWTF says:

Yeah Dave, you’re right, OFF WITH THEIR HEADS! Lets let everyone boot people in the head, seeing as you have no problem with it.

  • dave c says:

Accidents happen get over it lets concentrate on getting rid of cowardly deliberate dangerous play and cheating

  • Maggie85 says:

Just sounds like sour grapes to me! Maybe being biased but I thought apart from two worldies out of nowhere Chelsea didn’t really do enough and Newcastle deserved the win so to suggest that it would have have been different if colo was sent off just masks your teams own problems
