It is no secret that Newcastle United are on the hunt for a striker and it appears that the Magpies will turn their attention to Serie A in their search.

Today Newcastle have been linked with three Italian strikers: Fabio Quagliarella, Alessandro Matri and Diego Fabbrini.

According to Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, Juventus strikers Quagliarella and Matri have both been subject to tentative approaches from the Magpies.

29-year-old Fabio Quagliarella would appear to be a bit too old for Newcastle, but his scoring record in Italy is quite impressive.

He has scored 20 Serie A goals in the last couple of seasons at nearly a goal every other game and has 25 caps for Italy to his name.

28-year-old Matri is also very experienced, but has only played in Italian football to date and currently finds himself at the Stadio delle Alpi.

Since moving to Juventus in 2011, the 6ft striker has impressed, resulting in him signing a contract extension in the summer, which would seem to rule him out of a move.

The most likely transfer out of the three is for Diego Fabbrini, who plays for Udinese and is available on loan.

The 22-year-old made his debut for Italy against England earlier this year and the Daily Express says a move is possible.

Udinese coach Giampaolo Pozzo has said: “He wants to play more regularly, but the coach can only pick 11 players. If he wants to go and play somewhere else then we’ll send him out on loan”.

So, could Newcastle go for an Italian?
