Newcastle favourites to land Aston Villa striker

Darren Bent v NewcastleNewcastle United have emerged as favourites to sign former Sunderland, now Aston Villa, striker Darren Bent this month.

On yesterday’s evidence, Newcastle are in desperate need of a striker, as their main source of goals Demba Ba is now at Chelsea, and against Reading Papiss Cisse missed a couple of guilt-edged chances to put the game to bed and earn the Magpies an all-important three points.

If Newcastle are going to stay out of the bottom three and avoid relegation this season then it is vital that they take their chances and you just don’t feel confident when Cisse is in front of goal right now.

Darren Bent isn’t in favour at Aston Villa at the moment, a team who are also battling against the dreaded drop.

Villa manager Paul Lambert has continually put his faith in Christian Benteke and Bent didn’t make it off the bench against West Brom at the Hawthorns yesterday.

However, there is no doubting that he is a striker with pedigree and in the right situation will score goals again once more.

Throughout his career he hasn’t been far off a one in two goal ratio and while at north-east rivals Sunderland scored 32 goals in 58 Premier League appearances.

Sky Bet have installed Newcastle as 9/4 favourites to sign the 28-year-old, ahead of London clubs Fulham and QPR who are 11/4 and 4/1 respectively.

Would you forgive Bent for having played for Sunderland if he scored the goals that kept Newcastle in the Premier League?

Seeing that Aston Villa paid £18 million for him two years ago, would he cost too much?

Are there any better options out there?

if we get darren bent and he scores the goals for us i would forgive him.his the type of goal scorer we need and he would help cisse score and take the presure off him.

  • Bent could do a great job if he wants move back up north. Plus few games he would re-discover his scoring no doubt about it. Cisse good but just not confident at the moment and seems to be week on the ball and first touch lets him down, plus some one needs to teach him how the offside rule works.

  • Duncan Blacklock says:

No way he may have scored goals in the past but not the right player for us we need pace in the team

  • Robert Wilson says:

This sort of ambition will just be the final straw for me I’m afraid. Better than Shola but that isn’t really hard is it. I never ever thought I’d say it but come the end of January if this is what we end up with, letter will be going to the ticket office to cancel my direct debit season ticket renewal.

your not the only one, yesterday was the last straw for me 35 long fruitless years home and away to be shat on by various owners of this massive underachieving club

Bent will not come back north unless u pay him massive massive money, he’ll be down to London club where the best shops n nightlife is like a shot tbh.As for massive underachieving club……try WEE WEE overachieving club n u’ll b less deluded!! 🙂 FTM

What do sunlun & Newcastle supporters have in common? We both talk about the Toon constantly, SMB friend x

    • Bendy Bob says:

The answer is already there = Better than Shola! We Need Him! Every time we sign a player he has to be of a better caliber of who he is replacing that’s the only way we’ll progress Mike No Spend Cashley is in the business of buying players to sell on so we will always hover around mid table if we’re lucky with an owner with no ambition

  • nufc steve says:

it wood be nice if we sign him and he played agust shitland and got the winner that wood be good.

  • Porciestreet says:

At first thought, any port in a storm, but on reflection, he’s another Alan Clark, Michael Owen,or Gary Lineker, who’s a ‘johny on the spot’ sort of player and will score wherever he is. Personally, I would not hesitate. Get him in.

  • Nastynorm says:

Wudnt bother wudnt even av have him on a free don’t rate at all there’s got 2 b beta out there worth tryin

  • Davfc says:

He isn’t leaving villa and why would we sell him 2 a relegation rival anyway?

  • ROB_TOON says:

Get Bent in! Would be a great goalscorer for Newcastle and bound to score against the mackems-still young at 28 and his best form is yet to come- be great singing-suits him and NUFC- come on Bent u know it makes sense son! TOON TOON! BLACK N WHITE BENTY!

  • Aidan Dunphy says:

Not sure about his attitude, but he’s undoubtedly a Prem class striker and would give us the bite up front we’re desperately short of right now. Don’t think we can be choosy in our current predicament – it’s a fat lot of good having higher ambition if you’re relegated to the Championship.

  • Al says:

Thi guy is a quality striker. Just look how many seasons he hit the 20 goal mark being outside a top 4 team. Would be a great signing

  • Gary Lowes says:

HOW DARE ANYONE WANT HIM HE IS RED AND WHITE ID RATHER GO DOWN THAN HAVE HIM LOOK AT YOURSELVES

    • Denty says:

I know it’s not possible but are you trying to say if someone like messi went to Sunderland then moved on , that we shouldn’t sign him cos he’s a former red and white !!! That is just stupid get your priorities right , we need someone who can find the net and Bent has proved he can

  • stx555 says:

Alas beggers can’t be choosers, we need a hitman and Bent fits the criteria. ………
Get him or someone with goal scoring experience in now

  • Sims says:

Gary Lowe says and I quote “HOW DARE ANYONE WANT HIM HE IS RED AND WHITE ID RATHER GO DOWN THAN HAVE HIM LOOK AT YOURSELVES”.
    Gary……………..you’re an idiot !

  • chris b says:

Sorry Geordies it aint gonna happen in a million years. There is no chance villa will sell Bent while they are in a relegation battle least of all to one of there relegation rivals. And no offence but i hardly see Bent joining another relegation threatened team

  • James says:

Can’t see how it matters that he played for Sunderland, who cares? He scores goals. If he plays for Villa again, they have to pay Sunderland another £3 million, would they sell to a relegation rival though?

    • Johnny says:

The Sunderland/£3m thing is nonsense – especially as Bent has played for Villa since that rumour started.

  • A T Hedley says:

If you can afford his salary you can afford a better more consistent and loyal player. You had also better check if your manager has a daughter if you want him to keep Bents mind on the game.

  • Johnny says:

Paul Lambert has stated that he doesn’t want to sell Bent, and certainly wont sell to another team fight relegation.

  • Luke M says:

Villa fan here. Bent is a great finisher, but he misses a lot of easy chances (not the best 1:1 finisher). He offers little else than poaching so you need to be prepared to provide him with chances since he rarely makes them himself. He’s the sort of player that used to be popular in the PL, but since then clubs are looking at players that can do much more than just finish.

I’d wish Newcastle good luck in staying up, but I think we need it more than you do 😉

  • magic says:

SAFC Will pick up 4 million if he signs come on mags get him signed it will pay for your super Geordie Danny Graham….#shut the door on the way out..
