I can hardly believe that today it is the one-year anniversary of the tragic death of Newcastle United legend Gary Speed.

Speed may have played for Leeds, Everton, Bolton and Sheffield United, but it is of course his time with the Magpies that I remember fondly.

The Welshman played for Newcastle United from 1997 to 2004, proving to be quite a bargain for Newcastle manager Kenny Dalglish as the combative midfielder cost just £5.5 million.

During his seven years at the club, Speed played 284 times for the Magpies, with 213 of those appearances in the top flight of English football, the Premier League.

Speed’s goal record wasn’t bad, he scored 40 times in 284 appearances giving him a strike rate of a goal around every seven games, but it was the quality of goals that he scored that live long in the memory.

Gary wasn’t a great goal scorer, but he was a scorer of great goals, netting bullet headers and screamers from outside of the area.

Take a look at this little montage of some of Gary Speed’s best goals throughout his career in English football…

Gary Speed, you’re still missed.
