Newcastle United travel to Old Trafford this evening to face Manchester United in the third round of the Capital One Cup. It’s a very tough draw for the Magpies, but Newcastle manager Alan Pardew is likely to put out a strong team as the Capital One Cup represents one of Newcastle’s best chances of silverware this season. The match is live on Sky Sports and you can join us for our Live Blog – get involved and have your say!

The Capital One Cup is one of four competitions that Newcastle are involved in this season, alongside the Premier League, FA Cup and Europa League. While Newcastle’s squad may not be strong enough to battle on all four fronts, Alan Pardew will be keen to give this competition a good go and end Newcastle’s long trophy drought.

The indication is that Pardew will put out a strong team as well, which is likely to feature captain Fabricio Coloccini and terrier Cheick Tiote, who are both returning from injury. Fringe players such as Sylvain Marveaux, Dan Gosling and Shola Ameobi are all likely to get a run out, but Pardew might also give more game time to misfiring striker Papiss Cisse in an attempt for him to find some goal scoring form.

Manchester United are sure to play a weakened side, but given that Newcastle haven’t won at Old Trafford since 1972, the odds are still stacked against the Magpies. Let’s just hope that Alan Pardew’s men put in a good performance and play well as a team, with hopefully the odd spark from individuals thrown in.
