Newcastle target Fernando AmorebietaAs Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew scrambles to make defensive additions to his squad before the transfer window closes on Friday, Liverpool transfer target Fernando Amorebieta has entered the Magpies’ radar according to Tribal Football.

Athletic Bilbao are a side with plenty of top quality players, as their progress to the Europa League final last year showed.

Javi Martinez and Fernando Llorente in particular have been getting plenty of interest on these shores, while Fernando Amorebieta is also highly thought of by many in English football.

Venezuelan centre back Amorebieta has been linked with a move to Liverpool for a few weeks, but as they’ve kept hold of Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger, Newcastle might be ready to pounce.

The 27-year-old has just 12 months remaining on his contract, which has led to much interest, with his representatives, Football Management 04, earlier claiming that “His [Amorebieta’s] good season has attracted interest from several teams, one of which is Liverpool.”

A Venezuelan international, 6ft 4in tall Amorebieta grew up in the Basque area of Spain and played for Spain’s under 19s, before deciding his international football allegiance.

He is rated around the 10 million Euros (£8m) mark, and with his contract ending this summer, Bilbao could be willing to listen to offers if they can’t tie him down to a new deal, with him not featuring in their La Liga match last night with Atletico Madrid, as they were thrashed 4-0.

This would be a bit of a left-field transfer as far as Newcastle are concerned, but he would bring plenty of steel to the Newcastle back-line.

Here is a video compilation of Fernando Amorebieta that translates as ‘The hardest of all’ and has suitably epic music…
