James Perch on the golf courseNewcastle United won the Algarve Cup at the weekend to mark their pre-season with some silverware, but one man who won’t be winning any trophies for his exploits on the golf course is James Perch!

James Perch was something of a revelation for Newcastle last season. Previously ridiculed to some extent for his performances at right back and known purely for his record of picking up a handful of yellow cards on the trot, he was nothing more than a squad player.

However, last season Perch came into his own with some great performances in a defensive midfielder position, as well as across the backline, and has been dubbed by the Toon Army as ‘Perchino’ and is now a fans’ favourite.

Perch’s performances on the football pitch may be improving, but his efforts on the golf course don’t seem to be if teammate Ryan Taylor’s photos on Twitter are anything to go by.

Seeing as Newcastle were in the Algarve, they couldn’t leave the Portuguese resort without playing a bit of golf, and Taylor, Perch and Shola Ameobi headed to the tee.

Things clearly weren’t going that well for Perch as Taylor yesterday Tweeted: “Perchy struggling on how to hit this” and posted this photo:

Here Perch can’t see the wood from the trees and a response from former Newcastle teammate Peter Lovenkrands indicated that this is often the case on the golf course as he replied: “@TaylorR1984 hahaha love it! I can see he still hasn’t improved since we played last time! #lovesadropball hahaha”.

On the rare occasion that there’s a drop ball in the Premier League then maybe Perch will be called upon then, too!
