Newcastle to take advantage of Arsenal’s spending spree?

Newcastle target Nicklas BendtnerArsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner has hit the headlines for his underwear during Euro 2012, but would the Denmark international be a pants signing for Newcastle United?

Nicklas Bendtner is something of a controversial character. The 24-year-old Danish striker has this week been fined £80,000 for showing off his Paddy Power pants, but this isn’t the first time he’s been in trouble off the pitch.

Bendtner spent last season on loan at Newcastle United’s Premier League rivals Sunderland, but it ended on a sour note when the Dane failed to turn up on time to catch the bus for the Black Cats’ last match of the season.

If you can look past Nicklas Bendtner’s idiosyncrasies, he does have plenty to offer a Premier League side if he can get his head down, including the 6ft 5in tall striker’s presence in the air.

Bendtner netted eight times in the Premier League for Sunderland last season and has caught the eye in Euro 2012, scoring twice against Portugal, with his celebration leading to him getting in a spot of bother.

That brace gives him a record of 20 goals in 52 games at international level, which is more than decent, even if it doesn’t quite up to his level of confidence.

This confidence extends to the future, as Bendtner told the Daily Star Sunday: “I have had many offers but I will not do anything until after the Euros. I am confident about the future.”

With Denmark now out of Euro 2012, Bendtner will have to weigh up his options, as an extended stay at Arsenal looks unlikely following the arrivals of Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud.

West Ham are early favourites for his signature, while a move to Germany and Borussia Dortmund may be his preferred choice, but would Newcastle be wise to consider a swoop or should they put any plans to sign Nicklas Bendtner in the toilet?
