Is a £16m profit good enough for Newcastle?

Newcastle midfielder Cheick TioteManchester United and Chelsea are both taking a keen interest in Newcastle midfielder Cheick Tiote.

The Mail on Sunday is reporting that Newcastle United have put a £20 million valuation on their Ivorian midfielder; a valuation that Chelsea are happy to pay but that Man United may baulk at.

However, should Newcastle be happy to make a £16m plus profit on their combative midfielder, or should they be looking to keep Mr T at all costs?

Cheick Tiote arguably wasn’t one of Newcastle’s shining lights last season, but the fact that top Premier League clubs are still showing an interest in him shows how highly thought of he is in English football.

The 25-year-old managed 24 Premier League games last season, missing many through injury and international duty through the African Cup of Nations, while the season before suspension stopped him racking up more appearances.

In the 50 league games Tiote has played for Newcastle to date, his combative style is illustrated by the fact that he’s picked up 25 bookings – one in every other match.

While Tiote might not have got as many headlines as Yohan Cabaye in the middle of the park last season, he still showed his importance, with the 3-0 victory against Man United at St James’ Park in particular one game where Mr T ran the show.

If Tiote was sold for £20m, Newcastle would make a £16.5m profit on the £3.5m they paid FC Twente for his services.

You’d have to say that’s a pretty good return and while I would never advocate Newcastle selling their best players, if a bid of that amount was to be made then it would be hard to turn down.

Would it be too good to refuse though?

It won’t be a 16 million profit because FC TWENTE gets a percentage of any sell on fee .I think it was 10%.

I think he is the standout defensive midfielder in the league at the moment. He has many years ahead of him and is getting better and better. All teams fear him and he plays hard with no malice or give in his game which makes him a very likeable brick wall as long as he is on your team. I’d not sell him for less than 25mill and then only if I amazing scouting network had someone else lined up to replace him.

Standout DM in the league….ermmm I dont know, I would have Sandro, Song and Toure up there ahead of him but Tiote is quality.

If NUFC have a replacement lined up then go for it, 20mill got us Cabaye, Ben Arfa, Santon, Ba and Tiote with change left over.

  • tony says:

If he played for Man u they’d be asking 40 million just cos he plays for us Fergie thinks he should get him cheep i say hoi red nose bog off!!

  • mike says:

Utter poop, he wont go for any less than 35million. hes like 25 and has what 4 years left on his contract. £20million is a drop of what hes worth

  • AndyMac says:

Colo said he hoped the spine of the team would remain at SJP and Tiote is one key component of the spine !

However if you think “Cheik Tiote’s” grow on trees, go find another first before you sell him for £20m then realise you’ll need at least that much for a “like for like” replacement. Wouldnt take less than £30m plus sell on’s.

Our transfer policy is simple, any of our top players are not for sale unless someone comes in offering ‘silly money’ for Tiote, his market value is probably £20 to £25m. Cheik Tiote is the best enforcing defensive midfielder in the top flight on his day and he is only just coming into to his prime. Replacing him would be difficult. So he is clearly not for sale unless its an over market offer. That has to start at £30m with add-ons for performance, remember they are buying out a 4.5 year contract. This will allow good old Carr to go and recruit another 6 of the best europe has to offer.

In short Man United can not afford young Chiek Tiote, their postponed float in the far east means even they have an economic reality, I doubt they will spend much more than £30m on all transfers this window. That leaves City, who probably don’t need him, and Chelsea where I could see him. So the price is £30 Tom, and the valuation is not based at all on what we paid for him, its based on contract length, the current market, his ability and the whims of Sheiks and Oligarchs. I’m confident that if someone comes in for Tiote that Ashley and that nasty piece of work who does his bidding will screw them for every last pound they can get a la Andy Carroll, because they quite clearly know what they are doing in this respect.

I thought he was nailed on for Chelsea, but actually thought Mikel had a half-decent season and the Blues might have second thoughts

  • Andy says:

Agreed. The £20 mill asking price means he should go for considerably more than that, especially if there’s interest from other clubs. I’d be happy with £25 million, especially since we seem to have replacements on the radar. Tioté will be missed but it’s all part of the plan.

  • scottie says:

Chiek is on a very long contract with us, we don’t need the money, why sell him????????

  • Expert says:

As long as the fat man doesnt spend the money we recieve for players the answer is no. This is his chance of showing if he wants the club to be a CL contender every year, or his own profit toy.

  • ###lol says:

£2o Million is just not enough, sorry.

Think of it like this, if you were out at a car boot sale and was fortunate to find a signed Picasso, the owner didn’t know what it was and you managed to picked it up for £10. Would you then take £1,000 for it or would you want the full £200,000 for it?

I say the price we paid for Tiote is irrelevant, if you want to buy our star players you will have to pay his market rate…. £30 Million – £35 Million.

    Simples

  • John says:

It makes perfect sense to sell one of your best players to the team who finsihed just below you – if you want to make mmoney. It makes no sense if you have any footballing ambition.

  • chris says:

£20m is quite cheap actually… .. he’s a wanted player and one on good form which helped us to our league position… I’d still be 50/50 to sell at £30m .. because in the end of the day who could we get to replace him… ?

  • Phil says:

Weren’t Henderson and Downing alomost £20m apiece?

Yes,they are different but they are rubbish.

MA won’t let him go for only 20.

  • TOONARMYELITE says:

id want closer to 40 mil for him meself

  • TOONARMYELITE says:

even then id probally say no god knows how many goals we would of shiped last season without him protecting that defence

  • TOONARMYELITE says:

rather sell collo than tiote meself

  • Archie Brand says:

Dear oh dear! We’ve certainly lost the plot on this one.
Judas goes to the bindippers for stupid money, now the starting point is 20 million.

The only thing that counts here is profit.
If we can turn a 15 mill profit on a player having had a couple of good years out of him, then he’s gone.

If anyone even mentions 20 million we should take their hand off.

  • Toon69 says:

Tiote’s market value has nothing to do with how much we get for him, he’s only really worth what another club is willing to offer in the end, so it doesn’t matter what supposed price you put on him, if no one is willing to buy, then he’s not worth the value…

Personally I think he’s irreplaceable as he does the job we require him to do & thats what we need, if we sold him, the replacement may well not be the same or play differently, that in turn changes the dynamics of the team & could cause untold problems for other players, which in turn angers the fans towards them, its a domino effect…

If we did get ids for him or other players, I hope we’d stand to out grounds & not sell cheap, no matter who it is or what others think their ‘market value’ is….

  • toon1892 says:

hasnt he already turned down chelsea twice ?
