Celtic line up £4m double Newcastle swoop

Newcastle striker Leon BestSPL Champions Celtic are lining up a double swoop from Newcastle United, with both goalkeeper Fraser Forster and Leon Best being linked with a permanent move north of the border.

Let’s start with Fraser Forster, who has been on loan at Celtic for the past two seasons. The Scottish Sun is reporting that a £2 million deal is almost done and dusted, despite late interest coming from QPR and West Ham.

His representative Mark Curtis has been quoted as saying: “I will call [Celtic chief] Peter Lawwell and arrange a time to meet and try to finish things off – we need to. Fraser’s been away but I spoke to him and know where we need to be. I will now arrange to meet Peter. Other clubs are not in his mind. Does he want to stay at Celtic? Yes.”

It’s a bit of a shame that Forster has no future at Newcastle, but with Tim Krul ahead of him in the pecking order, the 24-year-old isn’t going to get any game time on Tyneside any time soon.

Then there’s Leon Best, who came close to joining Celtic in January and a permanent move to the Bhoys could be in the offing this summer.

A source close to Best told the Evening Chronicle: “Leon had the chance to go last January, but chose to stay on. He’s expecting opportunities to go again this summer, but will wait to see what happens.”

Celtic are thought to be one of those opportunities, but it isn’t a forgone conclusion that Best will leave, as the source further stated: “He [Best] likes it at Newcastle and wouldn’t have a problem staying on.”

Best is entering the final year of his contract with Newcastle and like Forster is thought to be available for around £2 million as Celtic look for firepower for their Champions League campaign.

For my money, if these two deals go ahead Celtic will be getting two decent Newcastle United players for less than £5 million, which is very good business.

Nice article. Thought Leon Best was going to be off loaded as he is surplus to requirements. £2 million seem to be a bit off the mark for him. Heard the Forster deal is done and it a matter of announcing it. Glad Lurch has committed as he will turn out to be a bargain buy.

Off topic, nice to see a Newcastle site not giving the usual shoite about the SPL, it’s crap, bla, bla, bla. There is some guy called NU Mad on some obsure website and he takes great pleasure in sticking the boot into Celtic and their support whenever the opportunity arises.

He’s giving Toon fans a bad name.

    All the best.

Gonnae have to agree with the comment above. Nice to see a Toon site that isn’t causing trouble by careless comments. Good post, well done.

agree, well balanced article, shame about NU Mad, say that next time you are in Bairds Bar!

  • JP...from The Rock says:

Neil – Yup spot on NU Mad is shite! Don’t go there I doubt many Newcastle fans do anyway.

On topic I am slightly saddened by the news of Best leaving as he is talented. Another good squad player to have that will also leave like Guthrie but I have no doubt both will be replaced with quality. On Forster his heart was never at Newcastle so he can leave. I always felt Krul was better and he’s proved me right.

Newcastle is on the up, long may it continue 🙂

That Nu mad prick probably has hun sympathies hence his hatred of Celtic. He’s a disgrace and a joke.

Glad it’s not just me that’s been appalled in the past by that knuckle-dragger on NU Mad. That guy’s got a real axe to grind against Celtic.

Gotta pity the guy writing it really, must be hard going through life being so numb from the neck up.

Glad to see a well balanced, well informed article involving NUFC and Celtic for a change.

It will be good to get get Forster signed up but i’m not at all convinced that Leon Best is going to add anything. He’s scored only 52 goals in 219 games and appears to be injury prone. Doesn’t sound like 2 million quids worth

  • John says:

I am happy we have finaly sorted out the goalkeeper problem, as for this guy Best its best to leave alone.

  • Kiddo says:

What do you nufc supporters think of Leon best? would you be happy to see him on your first team sheet?

  • Markinthetoon says:

I would be sad to see Best leave The Toon. He has proven when he gets a good run in the first team he is a hard worker and scores goals! The problem is he’s not going to be ahead of Cisse and Ba in our line up and he wants first team football. He would be a good buy for Celtic if he is given the opportunity.
