Newcastle target Nathaniel ClyneNewcastle United are looking to make Crystal Palace right back Nathaniel Clyne their second signing of the summer after Roman Amalfitano but are unwilling to shell out £5 million in compensation to secure the defender who is also wanted by Manchester United.

According to the People there is a difference in valuation of Clyne of £3m, with Crystal Palace wanting £3m up front followed by a further £2m in add-ons to set the total value of the deal at £5m, while Newcastle are not willing to go any higher than £2m.

The fee for Clyne is set to be decided at a tribunal as although the Palace defender is out of contract, he is still only 21-years-old and thus the Championship club still have a right to receive financial compensation for the work they’ve done with Nathaniel.

£5m does seem to be fairly steep for the England U21 international who has yet to play at the top level, but the fee may not put off Manchester United who are also looking to add the youngster, who made the PFA Championship Team of the Year for last season, to their squad.

Crystal Palace understandably want to be rewarded for developing one of the best young right backs in the country, but themselves will be anxious about going to a tribunal where the level of compensation that they receive will be out of their hands.

If an agreement can’t be made with the Magpies then Newcastle might decide to shun an expensive Englishman and turn to the continent once more, with Mathieu Debuchy available for just a couple of million more, which means that the French international represents much better value.

It has been reported that Debuchy is also wanted by Man United, so Clyne and Debuchy may well both be playing in the Premier League next season, but which one will be in Newcastle and which one in Manchester we’re still not sure.
