Three years ago, Newcastle United, led by Alan Shearer, were in the midst of a relegation battle in an attempt to stay in the Premier League; one they would go onto lose and hence drop down into the Championship.
With Newcastle now in 5th place in the Premier League and with a real chance of Champions League qualification, sometimes it is easy to underestimate how far the Magpies have come and just dismiss the past.
However, you have to remember the bad times to make the good times even better, so when you think about Hatem Ben Arfa’s wonder goal against Bolton and Papiss Cisse finding the back of the net for fun, just cast your minds back to that afternoon at Villa Park.

In the summer of 2009 many were predicting the demise of Newcastle in English football and saying that we would do a Leeds and fall further into the depths of the Football League, but what has actually happened couldn’t have been further from that.
We cantered to the Championship title at the first attempt and after a season of consolidation in our return to the Premier League, now Newcastle are making their assault on the top of the table and qualification to Europe.
People often talk about the rise and then the fall of players and clubs in football, but for Newcastle it’s the opposite and the following video nicely depicts the fall and rise of the Magpies…
