Ryan Taylor is one of Newcastle United’s most regular Tweeters and this afternoon laid into Manchester United winger Ashley Young after he yet again dived to win a penalty at Old Trafford, this time against Aston Villa.
Young is getting quite a reputation for going to ground easily to win spot kicks, having done it for the second week in succession, first against QPR and now against Villa, putting himself alongside the likes of Liverpool’s Luis Suarez and Tottenham’s Gareth Bale as serial divers.
Ryan Taylor, like many fans watching the match on Sky Sports this afternoon, was clearly disgusted by what he saw and Tweeted: “Ashley Young is an absolute DISGRACE. He’s the biggest cheat in the league. His antics are a joke.”
He later removed this Tweet, but his feelings haven’t changed as he further responded to comments from Manchester United fans saying: “Funny how everyone bar Man Utd fans thought it was a dive. #NotSurprised”.
That is the thing about diving. When someone from your own club does it you just look the other way, but when someone does it against your team you’re absolutely incensed. The only way to get rid of diving altogether is stop the hypocrisy and come down heavily on everyone who does it.
Taylor hit the nail on the head with his final comment, when he stated: “winds me up watching fellow professionals dive mate. He doesn’t need to. He’s an international footballer.” Ashley Young is a very good player and will probably go to Euro 2012 with England, but will now be thought of solely as a diver, which is a shame.
