Newcastle United and Liverpool have something of a history in the transfer market, what with Jose Enrique following Andy Carroll to Anfield, but now it looks like the Magpies and the Reds are set to lock horns over Benfica striker Nolito.

According to talkSPORT, Newcastle and Liverpool are amongst a number of clubs queuing up for the 25-year-old forward. Full name Manuel Agudo Duran, Nolito has previously played for Barcelona and the forward is getting plenty of attention from scouts at the Stadium of Light (not to be confused with the enemy Sunderland’s ground!)

According to his agent Oscar Font interest for the Spaniard is high, as Font stated: “Several intermediaries have called me to ask about the situation of the player and to say there are clubs interested, among them English. But there is nothing more concrete. The player is very happy in Lisbon and his target is to be a success here.”

Nolito is just 5ft 9in tall, but the diminutive forward has made quite an impression in Portugal this season. Having scored on his debut last year, he went on to net five times in as many matches for Benfica and equal the record of Portuguese legend Eusebio.

The 25-year-old isn’t an all-out striker, as he can operate behind the front man and on the wing, which would fit in well with Newcastle’s current system. The one sticking point would be that he only signed a five-year contract with Benfica last summer and ridiculous fees of £15 million have been mentioned.

Here’s Nolito in action…
