North-east duo battle for Tottenham’s sidelined starlet

According to The People, Newcastle and Sunderland are set to battle it out this summer for Tottenham Hotspur left back Danny Rose. The 21-year-old has found first team opportunities limited at White Hart Lane this season, as Benoit Assou-Ekotto has cemented himself as first choice left back and this doesn’t look like changing anytime soon. Thus the England U21 international will have to look elsewhere in the Premier League for regular first team football and the north-east could well turn out to be his destination.

Danny Rose seems to have been around for ages for someone so young. He was picked up in 2007 from Leeds by Tottenham, two years after Spurs raided Elland Road for fellow English youngster Aaron Lennon.

But unlike Lennon, the move hasn’t proved to be so prosperous for Rose, who has been farmed out to Watford, Peterborough and Bristol City respectively. In fact, he hasn’t even played a dozen times for Tottenham and is only renowned in north London for one particularly stunning goal he scored against rivals Arsenal.

On Monday Night Football this week, Sky Sports Presenter Gary Neville picked his favourite volley of the Premier League era. Somehow, he didn’t put Alan Shearer’s bullet of a shot against Everton at St James’ Park in his top three. Instead, he chose Rose’s strike against Arsenal at White Hart Lane.

It was some way for Rose to mark his league debut and will ensure he is always fondly thought of by Tottenham fans. This is what Rose has pretty much been living off at Spurs for the last two years or so…

Newcastle will be in the market for a full back in the summer, with Danny Simpson’s future undecided and Davide Santon still learning the ropes in the Premier League. Despite having played more than 20 times for England U21, I’m afraid Rose just doesn’t compare to someone like Erik Pieters who has played more than a dozen times for The Netherlands national team. At just 5ft 8in tall, he doesn’t have much aerial presence either, being similar in height to Simpson.

It would be interesting to know how highly Tottenham fans rate Danny Rose. Would you be sad to see him go and would Newcastle supporters be happy to see the youngster wearing a black and white shirt next season instead of signing for the neighbours?

rose is very underrated, an able left back (or winger) just out of the team as ekkoto has been in good form, and bale doesnt need me explaining . would be a good signing just doubt we would sell him as he may be the future.
