While Newcastle United might not have been able to manage a win in the Premier League in their last three games, following defeat to Tottenham Hotspur with back-to-back draws against Wolves and Sunderland, the last month hasn’t been a complete disaster for the Magpies. Newcastle have managed to secure captain Fabricio Coloccini and star goalkeeper Tim Krul down to long-term deals. The Dutchman signed a new five-year contract with Newcastle last week and with his commitment to the club not in doubt, Krul could now be key in bringing one of the Toon’s major transfer targets to Tyneside in the summer.

Despite bringing in Davide Santon in the summer, Newcastle are still not particularly strong in the full-back positions. Santon is still very young and has shown a couple of signs that he could go on to become a very good player for the club, but this may be in the right back position. Currently filling that slot is Danny Simpson, who is yet to sign a new contract at St James’ Park and still isn’t a fan favourite on Tyneside. So the long term picture could see Santon switch to right back, leaving the left back slot vacant, possibly to be filled by Erik Pieters.

Pieters is a long-term target of Alan Pardew, with the Dutchman linked with a move to Newcastle last summer. He is going from strength to strength with PSV and despite being just 23, has already picked up 14 caps for The Netherlands national team, with the latest of those coming up against England at Wembley. Newcastle goalkeeper Krul was also in that Holland squad, and the pair of them are good friends, having coming through the ranks together in The Netherlands and now Tweeting each other regularly.

On the back of Krul signing his new contract at Newcastle, Pieters Tweeted: “Congratulations to my friend #TimKrul with his new deal – You deserve it – All the best this weekend #beat.those.people”. Tim Krul’s and Newcastle’s success in the Premier League this season hasn’t gone unnoticed by Pieters either, with the Dutchman also Tweeting: “@TimKrul It’s going good men, please stay yourself-All the best with your glory days #keepincontact” and posting this picture…

It would be easier for Krul and Pieters to keep in contact with each other if they both played for Newcastle United! Maybe Tim can have a quiet word with Erik in the summer, when the pair will link up for The Netherlands in Euro 2012, and sell him the move to Tyneside. Pardew clearly likes the look of Pieters and I think the Dutch left back could really thrive in the north-east and form part of a formidable Newcastle United back five alongside his compatriot.
