Why Newcastle shouldn’t put all their eggs in one basket

Tim Krul may have let in five goals for Newcastle United against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane yesterday, but the Dutchman had little chance with any of them and has still had a great season for the Magpies. His stock in the Premier League has risen rapidly over the course of the last year and he is now one of the best goalkeepers in the division. Inevitably that will lead to other clubs casting admiring glances in his direction, so should Newcastle be looking to safeguard against a potential exit?

With Tim Krul in such great form and Fraser Forster in exile in the SPL at Celtic, you’d have to say that the latter’s Newcastle future doesn’t look too promising. However, earlier this week the Evening Chronicle reported that Forster has not given up hope of becoming Newcastle’s number one and may even be looking to return to St James’ Park in the summer, despite a deal being agreed with Celtic in principle.

I don’t think this would be a bad thing for Newcastle, as you can never predict what will happen in football and it would be wise for Alan Pardew to get another talented young goalkeeper back at the club. Forster is highly thought of within the game and it is just a little unfortunate that the 23-year-old has Krul ahead of him in the pecking order and that the Newcastle hierarchy have decided he’ll have the gloves long-term.

Come the summer Tim Krul will be a man in demand within the Premier League and across Europe. I don’t doubt that Newcastle will do all they can to keep him, but if someone like Tottenham were to come in with a ludicrous bid then Newcastle would be forced to sell. Then in this hypothetical situation, Forster could well get his long-awaited chance at the club for whom it would be a dream for the Hexham-born stopper to play for.

While you may think it is slightly pessimistic to talk about the potential exit of Tim Krul, at Newcastle you know that anything can happen, as was shown at White Hart Lane yesterday. Fraser Forster is the best goalkeeper that Newcastle have brought through their youth ranks for a number of years and the Geordie lad may be prepared to wait for the chance to fulfil his dream, so Pardew might be wise to hang onto him for a little while longer.
