West Ham manager Sam Allardyce is looking to former club Newcastle United in a bid to strengthen the Hammers’ push for the Championship title. Having swooped for former Newcastle captain Kevin Nolan in the summer, Allardyce is eyeing up Shane Ferguson to bolster his squad. 20-year-old Ferguson is on the fringes at Newcastle and it is thought that Alan Pardew is happy to send the Northern Irish youngster on loan until the end of the season.

Shane Ferguson’s substitute appearance for Newcastle against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane on Saturday is likely to be his last in a black and white shirt this season. The youngster, who can play at left back or left midfield, with the latter being where he featured at the weekend, is keen to play more for Newcastle but Pardew and Allardyce are likely to sell the loan opportunity to him.

When speaking about getting 45 minutes under his belt against Spurs, Ferguson told Sky Sports: “It was good to get on for more experience. The manager had faith in me and put me on, which was good, but the result was disappointing. I just want to show people what I can do, and push my way into the team as much as I can. Hopefully, I can stay involved. I’ve got to work hard in training, and try and get a couple more appearances under my belt.”

Showing people what he can do is something Ferguson can achieve in the Championship with West Ham. Haris Vuckic has already been farmed out to West Ham’s promotion rivals Cardiff City and expect to see Ferguson drop down a division in the very near future, too. Shane may be looking to feature for Newcastle United against Wolves on 25th February, but I think on that day he’ll be more likely to be playing in claret and blue against Crystal Palace at Upton Park.

Former West Ham manager Pardew still has good links with the Hammers and will hope that a short-term move to London can do Shane Ferguson the world of good. I don’t see why it wouldn’t and he could even link up down the left with fellow countryman George McCartney, who will also help Shane settle.
