Should Newcastle up their £4m bid in the summer?

In the January transfer window, Newcastle United showed interest in West Ham defender James Tomkins. Following the signature of Demba Ba in the summer, Newcastle manager Alan Pardew was looking to raid his former club once more, but West Ham resisted the Magpies’ advances and kept hold of their promising youngster. In fact, Tomkins even signed a new four-and-a-half year contract to keep him at West Ham until 2016, so is that the end of Newcastle’s interest?

In the summer it will be interesting to see who Newcastle make their number one target in terms of acquiring a new centre back. It’s likely they’ll have a few targets in mind and like with Papiss Cisse last month, move for the one who becomes available. In the current circumstances, and with the signing of his new contract, that looks unlikely to be Tomkins, so instead Watford’s Adrian Mariappa, Montpellier’s Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Ajax’s Jan Vertonghen will come back into contention, but things could change.

It has now been confirmed that Newcastle made a firm bid for Tomkins in the January transfer window, as revealed by West Ham chairman David Sullivan in an interview with Iain Dale on WestHamTillIDie.com. Newcastle made an offer for Tomkins of £4 million, which was obviously less than West Ham’s valuation of the 22-year-old who has already played more than 100 times for the Upton Park outfit and has represented England at all levels up to U21.

Despite his young age Tomkins will want to be playing at the highest level, which might not be too far away for him. West Ham are currently second to Southampton in the Championship table, but have two games in hand on the south coast club. If the Hammers can keep hold of that second automatic promotion spot, or improve on it, then Tomkins will be back in the Premier League after just one year away and is sure to feature regularly in Sam Allardyce’s starting eleven.

The one opening Newcastle may have is if West Ham fail to get out of the very competitive Championship division, as then Tomkins may be forced to revaluate his options. Pardew clearly rates James Tomkins and may even be able to persuade the Newcastle hierarchy to up their bid for the 6ft 3in centre back, who has also featured as a defensive midfielder recently, in the summer. However, with the other options that are out there, would you like to see Newcastle stick or twist on Tomkins?

“should we give up our bid”
yes, he signed a new contract, will be too expensive, would rather we got mbiwa, douglas or vertonghen, the latter being very unlikely.

  • andym says:

No chance.leave well alone.dnt really trust pardew with transfers after obertan.
Ins- douglas (free), pieters (5m), mbiwa (5m), hoilett (5m comp to bb), notts forest mf on a free (cnt remember his name), & rodallega (free). 15m spent. Sell forster, perch, kadar, smith, gosling, obertan, ameobi, ranger, lovenkrands. Should generate a bit meaning net spend of only a few mil.

  • Hammer says:

Just a Hammers point of view.

If Newcastle managed to get Tomkins off of us, it would be a coup.

This lad will be worth £10m in two years.

I know that many Toon fans will say there is better, but there really isn’t. He is class, and I never say that about West Ham players.

He’s very young, can play in the holding role too, is very good with the ball at his feet and is brilliant in the air.

But, as a Hammer, I would want you to stay clear of him. I don’t you’ll get him if we go up, but if we were willing to deal, you won’t find many better CB’s than Tonks.

  • Tomtom says:

PMSFL dream on lads, Tonka is going nowhere, new contract signed hammer thru and thru and prem football next season. England team this time next season I put money on it! Not a better young English CB around ATM IMO, very bright future for this lad.

    Hammer.
Didn’t realise he was that good.tbh I’m wary of all english players, vasty over priced imo.far better value on continent. Gud luck this season.I hope use get up were u belong

  • James says:

He just re-signed, so try coming back with 15m plus. He is a Hammer like Noble, so even if you didn’t temp G&S, he wouldn’t budge. You’d be better, putting your money towards not losing Ba in the Summer.

  • BillytheFish says:

Guarantee Fat Sam thinks he’s shite as he couldn’t see a player if he fell on him and will probably want to replace him with Sol Campbell.

Come back up hammers, miss my beer and banter down the East End.

  • andym says:

Ah we’ll u value him highly and newcastle fans don’t so works out well for all concerned really!4th choice 4us behind douglas, mbeiwa & vertonghen, cnt see him getting in our team when taylor, collo & willo are fit anyway

  • Jamie says:

I really hope you dont. He has been fantastic this year!!! I’d expect an England call up in a few years. Top defender, our best player by a mile this season!!!

  • Toonie says:

Of course he will come to Newcastle. We are a big team. We are the hot-bed of football. The North-East are top of the heap my little Hammer friends. He will come here to win trophies and to add to all of the ones that we have won lately. Tell him to lave his girlfriend at home though otherwise Pardew might get a bit randy again – Champio swordsman that man. Howay.

  • Hammerash says:

First up if we don’t go up, he may leave.

Second up, will someone please tell me why Newcastle don’t play In scotland. Is it like the situation with Swansea?

    • Tomtom says:

Erm maybe it’s because Newcastle is not in Scotland! Should Sunderland play in scotland to?

When teams like Cardiff and Swansea were formed there was as far as I know no welsh football league so they entered the nearest available.

  • Hammerash says:

Of course it’s in Scotland. It’s certainly not English is it! I guess you could count Sunderland in that as well. I’ve never been able to figure that one out. I always thought it must be quite strange looking down on England from up there wondering when someone was going to kick them
Out of a foreign league. Whatever next. Norwegian clubs playing in an English league?

    • Tomtom says:

The border between Scotland and England stretches for 108 miles (174 kilometres) between the Solway Firth along the Cheviot Hills and the river Tweed, to the North Sea.

Hadrian’s Wall, built by the Romans, ran further south than this, from Carlisle on the river Eden to the river Tyne in the east.

The town of Berwick on Tweed, at the mouth of the Tweed, changed hands between Scotland and England 13 times between 1147 and 1482 before finally becoming part of England.

Despite being in England, the football (soccer) team in Berwick (Berwick Rangers) plays in the Scottish League, the only English team to do so.

Berwick is a good 60 miles from Newcastle so no Newcastle is not part of Scotland!

  • James says:

How in the world are Newcastle a bigger club??? Hot-bed of football, trophy winning??? I think someone got drunk even earlier than usual in Toon Town today.

  • Hammerash says:

Listen, the fact that Newcastle is 123.6 miles from blah blah blah it’s Scottish. The very fact that Newcastle is much closer to the capital of Scotland than England also speaks volumes. The bottom line is that it’s Scottish.

  • Hammerash says:

The character ‘rab c nesbit’ has this whole geordie thing going on, and he’s Scottish. The facts keep piling up. Oh and the crankies, there’s another Geordie scot.

  • Tomtom says:

Pmsl most places up north are nearer to Scotland’s capital then England’s! According to your intellect both Manchester clubs should be Scottish! You not from around them parts are you? You seem to have the same intelligence lol

  • Hammerash says:

So tomtom, are you seriously telling me that you consider newcastle to be English and Manchester to be Scottish ??

Don’t be daft, Manchester is English. For a start THEY SPEAK English. Unlike folk from Newcastle. Just because a town is nearer to Scotland doesn’t make it automatically Scottish, it’s just that in the case of Newcastle it proves a point.

I really cannot believe you think Manchester is in Scotland!!!!! What school didn’t you go to. Cripes!
