Olivier Bernard was a great servant for Newcastle United. The left back played for Newcastle for five years from 2000 to 2005 and unfortunately, like many Magpies players at the time, the Frenchman’s happy time at the club was ended by then manager Graeme Souness’ lack of man-management. Bernard even returned to Newcastle in 2006, but by then his career was already on a downward spiral as injuries started to get the better of him and the 5ft 9in defender called it quits a year later due to a hip injury, spending time training with former Newcastle United teammate Laurent Robert at Toronto FC prior to calling it a day.

Since retiring, Olivier Bernard has popped up now and again. He’s been on Sky Sports News championing the Show Racism the Red Card campaign from time to time, which has obviously been in the news a fair bit recently. Yesterday he made another appearance after the Newcastle United v Aston Villa Premier League encounter at St James’ Park, in which he was giving the Magpies’ new signing and match winner Papiss Demba Cisse a helping hand with his post-match interview.
It seems like Olivier Bernard has been given a new role at Newcastle, as Papiss Cisse’s translator! While the multi-talented Demba Ba was performing this role in the Sky Sports interview, Bernard took on the job for Match of the Day 2. It’s good to see Olivier around the place and with the increasing number of French-speaking players arriving at Newcastle, Bernard’s translating services might be needed for a while yet. On another note, now that Nobby (Solano) has retired can we get him in as a coach to a) teach the new lads what it means to become toon legend.

Solano could teach Obertan how to be a decent right winger… cos all he is useless OMG… and Gutierrez for that matter, yes, his cross for Cisse’s goal was good, but how many crosses does he do in a match normally? why do we have to complicate the role of a winger… cross cross cross… get the ball into the forwards… we can then get back to being a good team… otherwise Gutierrez is class… Obertan could be too… and show some emotion when you score… when you scored against Blackburn… it looked like you do it every game… it’ll be 2 years till we see you follow that one up…
Oh.. and PS… Oliver Bernard was class … probably the best ever left back we have had on Tyneside… yes, Beresford was good… but Bernard’s technique was amazing… sad to see him leave… but glad to see him back on Tyneside…
