Newcastle to make do with Mariappa

With just ten hours of January transfer deadline day 2012 left, Newcastle United are yet to dip their toes into the transfer market again and any business they are conducting is being well and truly done behind closed doors. The word is that Newcastle are looking to complete a deal for Watford defender Adrian Mariappa.

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew told the Evening Chronicle earlier that: “On the last day, there might be some movement. But nothing that will impact on us massively in or out.” That’s both good news and bad news, as hopefully we’ll keep the likes of Demba Ba, Cheik Tiote and Fabricio Coloccini, but no huge names will be coming in.

Those comments point even more to a move for Mariappa. The 25-year-old was watched in Watford’s FA Cup match with Tottenham Hotspur at Vicarage Road last Friday by John Carver and Steve Stone. The only sticking point is Watford’s £4 million valuation, but I’d be surprised if a compromise wasn’t agreed by both parties. As Pardew has stated: “The ball is now in Watford’s court”.

Pardew further said “On the back of Cisse coming in, not to lose Cheik, Demba or Colo or anybody else means we would have had the best window we could have had in my view.” So it looks like today could be a quiet one for Newcastle as they make do with Mariappa.

But do you agree that this is the best window Newcastle could have had if a deal for a centre half is completed?
