Newcastle to profit from Man City summer sale

With Newcastle on the lookout for players all over the pitch, a bargain will never go amiss for Alan Pardew. Manchester City are adding to their squad all the time and unsurprisingly they have a number of players who will never get a look in, some of which are of a very high standard, too. So, with Roberto Mancini conducting a summer sale at Man City, which players should Newcastle be looking to pick up on the cheap?

The one Man City player that Newcastle are continually linked with is Wayne Bridge. He isn’t the only left back the Magpies are looking at, Erik Pieters and Aly Cissokho are two more and the former England international would provide decent back up for either of those two. The one thing that concerns me about Bridge is his salary. He’s reportedly currently on £90,000 a week at Man City, of which Newcastle would need to pay half in any loan deal in addition to a fee of around £2 million. This would be seriously bad business for a player who’s on the way down rather than up.

One Man City defender who is yet to be linked with Newcastle, but played just down the road last season, is Nedum Onuoha. The former England U21 international spent last season on loan at Sunderland, played over 30 games and did reasonably well. This season the 24 year old doesn’t even have a squad number at City, which doesn’t bode well for a player looking for more first team football. At Newcastle he could compete with Danny Simpson for the right back slot and provide cover in the centre.

Then there’s Craig Bellamy. The Daily Star reported that a Newcastle return could be on the cards, but I just don’t see that happening. While many of the Toon Army would be willing to take him back, the Newcastle board won’t want another troublesome player. They already have their hands full with Joey Barton; add Bellamy into the mix and Pardew will definitely have his work cut out.

Two City players Newcastle have previously been linked with but for who an approach doesn’t seem to be on the horizon are Shaun Wright-Phillips and Vladimir Weiss. Bolton are thought to be in advanced talks with SWP but a deal is far from done, however I don’t suppose Newcastle need another midfielder. Weiss is a more offensive player and with no future for him at the Etihad Stadium, could Newcastle continue the transfer policy they implemented when signing Gabriel Obertan a buy a talented 21 year old who has much to prove?

I definitely wouldn’t be surprised if Newcastle picked up at least one Man City player before the end of August. Wayne Bridge looks to be the most likely, but Nedum Onuoha could be a decent outside bet. Then there’s the more attacking players of which the Magpies could take their pick given City’s riches in those areas, but perhaps it’s only Weiss that fits the Newcastle transfer mould.

As a City fan, you would be well advised to steer clear of Bridge as he is far too slow and gets caught out of position too often. Nedum is a very good right back and can play centre half. SWP is past his best but can still do a job if his confidence returns and although I haven’t seen much of Weiss, he is skilful but lightweight. You don’t need me to tell you about the pros and cons of Bellamy!
What do you think of Obertan, for as far as I could see he is fast and that is about it!!!

I think we could sign a few players from man city, Onion would be a good shout, Weiss could do a job also but would like to see Adam Johnson and maybe bellemy or Santa Cruz would be worth a gamble but all depending on wages.. please stay clear of bridge.

Seconded, @Cityblue. If you get Bridge, the most entertainment you’ll get out of him is the twice-yearly John Terry handshake.

SWP had a great pre-season and still a great trier, though has perhaps lost a yard.

Onuoha is a good defender who could improve given a run in a team (as seen last year with your neighbours). I’d be sorry to see him go.

Weiss blows hot and cold, but is still young.

John Guidetti (reserve striker) is worth a look, too. Don’t think Adebayor would fancy the toon climate after a year in Madrid, but you’re welcome to him.

I’ve got a feeling you’re in for an interesting season. As someone whose team has spent most of my life down the wrong end of league tables, I hope you have a good one (except against the blues). Gallows humour is no substitute for a real smile, as I’m just discovering.
