Newcastle’s pre-season friendly against Darlington on Friday saw Alan Pardew’s men don the 2011/12 away shirt, and it’s a stunning one as well. The orange number is sure to lead to a number of headlines along the lines of ‘the future’s bright’, the future’s orange, but I’m happy to put up with those to see Newcastle play in a decent looking kit.

While Newcastle’s home shirt is always a variation on the famous black and white stripes, the Magpies have experimented with their away kits over the years, and not always with great success.

However, since took over the manufacturing of the Newcastle kit from , it’s fair to say they’ve made a decent attempt at the away shirts. Last year’s all blue shirt and this year’s orange kit are definitely a step up from some of the past efforts.

There was of course the 2009 Newcastle away shirt nicknamed the banana, with the purple shirt preceding that, while in the years prior to that many were a variation on dark blue / black. But what’s your favourite Newcastle away shirt of the 21st century?

I’ve trawled through the archive to dig out the Newcastle away shirts since 2000 to jog your memory and remind you how good, or bad, some of our shirts have been. Check out the gallery and pick your favourite.

“Decent Looking” and “a step up”?
Perhaps you also think it should be worn with a pashmina shawl?
    Its absolute garbage.

In one breath we are shouting about the tradition of the number 9 shirt, the next we’re praising a poncey Thunderbirds away kit

‘hopped purple and violet’ ?? Are you on acid mate? It was a hopped maroon and blue! A purple and violet shirt would possibly be the most vile ever! As for my fav, it’s the black northern rock… Or the silver one we had as a european top the same year!

I feel that losing Poz will hurt the Bills more than many seem to think. Besides losing a steady starter as described above, it can’t bode very well for the image of the Bills amongst other Free Agents that a player who was singled-out as a priority to re-sign chooses to sign elsewhere 12 hours later.
