If Newcastle fans could have one wish this year, many would simply ask to see a full season of Hatem Ben Arfa in action. After his horrific injury sustained against Manchester City last season, we have been waiting patiently to see him pull on the Newcastle shirt once more. However, the Frenchman has suffered an injury in Newcastle’s pre-season tour of America and although the seriousness of the blow he suffered to his left ankle is not yet known, it’s bad enough for Ben Arfa to leave the US and fly back to Newcastle.

In these kinds of situations you can’t help but think the worst. Alan Pardew and the majority of Newcastle fans have placed a lot of importance in Ben Arfa ahead of next season. Pards has already said he’ll play in the ‘number ten’ role behind the striker and if fit will be the source of much of our creativity. It appears that the term ‘if fit’ could hold more significance for Hatem Ben Arfa than for any other Newcastle player and getting him on the pitch regularly could be a difficult task.

As we don’t know the extent of Ben Arfa’s injury, let’s be positive and cross our fingers that he’ll be back and raring to go in time for the new season. After having a precautionary x-ray, the 24-year-old is being reassessed over the next two days – 48 hours that could well define Newcastle’s season. Below is an image of Hatem Ben Arfa we’ve seen too often already and one that every Newcastle fan feared; the Frenchman writhing around in pain.
