Shearer on his way to Cardiff?

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer could be set for a return to management, as Championship side Cardiff City are said to be holding talks with the former Premier League striker according to BBC Sport Wales. Shearer has not been involved in management since failing to keep Newcastle in the Premier League back in 2009, but it is thought that the Match of the Day pundit has been waiting for another opportunity to show that he has what it takes to be a manager.

If Shearer was to take the Cardiff job, he certainly wouldn’t be taking the easy route back to management. The Bluebirds relieved David Jones of his services at the end of the season, after Cardiff fell at the playoff stages once again, and what hurt even more was that Welsh rivals Swansea make it into the big time. 40 year old Shearer is on the shortlist along with another former Newcastle manager, Chris Hughton, and giving Alan the job would be seen to be something of a risk after his less than successful stint in charge at St James’ Park.

The odds on Shearer becoming the next Cardiff City manager have shortened dramatically, and a link up with former Magpie Michael Chopra could be on the cards. As could being re-united with Craig Bellamy, given that the on-loan Manchester City striker stays at the City of Cardiff Stadium. Despite being former strike partners, relations between Shearer and Bellamy are not thought to be the best, and the Welshman has even been linked with the top job at Cardiff himself.

As a Newcastle fan, it would be good to see Alan Shearer get back into management, as despite his initial lack of success, you still feel the top job at St James’ Park might lie in wake for him again sometime in the future. He can only improve on a 12% win ratio and it would be interesting to see what sort of calibre of player Shearer might be able to attract to the South Wales club. Watch this space…
