According to reports, Newcastle are set to make their first signing of the summer in the form of French international midfielder Yohan Cabaye. While Newcastle have been heavily linked with his Lille teammate and Ivory Coast striker Gervinho, it appears that Cabaye is the man that Alan Pardew has gone for, although I wouldn’t rule out a double raid of the Ligue 1 club.

Last week Pardew was claiming that the club were close to signing an international midfielder, and if reports in the French press are to be believed, then that’s exactly what they’ve done. The box-to-box midfielder has represented various French youth teams, and has played for the senior national side twice.

If Cabaye does sign for Newcastle for a transfer fee believed to be in the region of £5 million, he will join Hatem Ben Arfa in the French contingent at St James’ Park. Cabaye has led Lille to the League and Cup double in France this season, and maybe believes he has achieved all he can in Le Championnat.

Would Cabaye represent a good acquisition for Newcastle? Let’s just hope it’s the first of many signings this summer! Here’s a couple of goals from the lad…
