FIVE forgettable moments for Newcastle

The 2010/11 Premier League season has been a decent one for Newcastle and a top half finish wasn’t far away for the Magpies. There have been plenty of memorable moments, but there have also been many that Newcastle fans would rather forget.

Arguably Newcastle’s worst moment came off the pitch when they sold Andy Carroll to Liverpool, but let’s stick with on the pitch disappointment. There wasn’t too much of that, but I have managed to draw up a shortlist of Newcastle’s five worst moments on the pitch this season.

5: Losing to Stoke, twice! – As if losing to Stoke once wasn’t bad enough, Newcastle were well and truly humbled by the Potters at the Britannia Stadium. After forfeiting a 1-0 lead at home to Tony Pulis’ men at home, Newcastle were never in the game at the Britannia, and the defeat is one that Alan Pardew will want to forget. Let’s hope we can pick up at least a point against Stoke next season.

4: Forfeiting the double against Sunderland – It was all going so swimmingly at the Stadium of Light. Newcastle were heading for the double over their closest rivals thanks to another poacher’s effort from Kevin Nolan. The Magpies were in complete control of the game, unlike the match at home to Tottenham a week later when they were hit by another last minute equaliser, but Steve Harper palmed an effort into Asamoah Gyan’s chest and somehow it went in; sickening.

3: The ‘final’ nail in Hughton’s coffin – The 3-1 defeat to West Brom at The Hawthorns on Sunday 5th of December turned out to be Chris Hughton’s last game in charge of Newcastle United. On the back of that poor display and a few more less than impressive performances, Mike Ashley gave Hughton his marching orders. The match itself will probably be remembered for some woeful defending from Sol Campbell, but hopefully Newcastle can get their revenge over the Baggies at St James’ Park on Sunday.

2: A Bolton humiliation – The match at the Reebok Stadium is one that Newcastle fans would rather forget. The Magpies shipped five goals and had Fabricio Coloccini sent off. As if that wasn’t bad enough, Mike Williamson faced an FA charge after the match, which meant that Newcastle had to do without their two first-choice centre backs for the next three matches. Andy Carroll managed to net a goal but that was scant consolation for arguably the worst performance of the season.

1: ‘That’ match against Stevenage – With Newcastle sitting relatively pretty in the Premier League, a good cup run was in order. However, that didn’t happen as the Magpies were sent packing by Stevenage in the 3rd round. If the first half was uninspiring, then the second half was just embarrassing. Not even a fine Joey Barton strike could save Newcastle’s blushes as they were beaten 3-1 and any hope of winning major silverware disappeared for another season.
